I came to the slow realisation that I was trying to fulfill outdated dreams. I was following a waterfall model rather than agile. I had dreamed up something to aim for when I was younger, but I had failed to revisit those dreams as I aged. I was trying to achieve something that a younger me wanted, but on reflection, the older me, the me now, no longer wanted or needed. I was attempting to cross something off a to do list that no longer mattered.
It is possible for us to outgrow our dreams. The purpose of dreams or goals for the future is to give us hope. We don’t have to achieve them. If they are for the near future and come with clear objectives, then sure, go for it. The dream is probably still fresh. But if it’s something you came up with many years ago, then it is probably worthwhile having a long look at that dream or goal. Is it something the you of today wants? We change over time. Circumstances change. Priorities change. Maybe the dream is no longer needed. Maybe it’s time to let it go and to replace it with new ones.
Keep on dreaming and chasing those dreams, but don’t be afraid to let them go if they are no longer dreams for the you today.
